After the journey

Long story short, I was accepted as K2N participant and attended meetings to create and discuss programs, which will be carried out in our designated places, for a month. We were divided into groups of 5 and each of us must be responsible for at least one program.

There were 8 compulsory programs and a group program (mine was traditional foods and drinks). The 8 programs were:

a. Rumah baca, where local people can gain access to books, which we had brought. It will be evaluated after we leave and if successful, more books will be sent.

b. Mendongeng, beryanyi, dan bermain permainan tradisional. This program focuses in archiving local games, folk stories, and songs, in order to preserve them. In addition, we also introduced games, songs, and stories from Java island.

c. Mengunjungi lansia dan orang sakit, in english is visiting the elderly and sick people. In design, the program was focused more on the elderly, to help them to create an elderly community, where they can be more “productive“.

d. Penyuluhan narkoba, miras, serta HIV/AIDS. Educating people about drugs, alcohol, and HIV/AIDS. Further explanation will not be necessary, I think.

e. Penyuluhan hukum. This program focuses on law problems such as land ownership, citizenship, and illegal fishing. The program will be carried out in form of informal discussion.

f. Penyuluhan kesehatan, gizi, serta KB untuk perempuan. Basically, the target of the program is female. Topics covered were about reproductive health, nutrition, and family planning for females. I chose to be responsible for this program, as I studied medicine.

g. Kebersihan anak sekolah. This program aim at elementary students and its scopes were dental health, hand hygiene, and school environment health.

h. Kesehatan lingkungan dan KB untuk pria. In translation, environmental health and family planning for males.

I will post about my experience doing K2N in Southwest Rote, Batutua district, in my next posts.

It's possible if you properly introduce yourself :)
